North Providence Schools Approve College Admission Pilot (upriseri.com) — North Providence High School students will soon be automatically considered for admission to CCRI, RIC, and URI through a new state-backed direct college admission pilot approved by the School Committee. The district also greenlit a grant-funded flight simulator for the JROTC program and new middle school math intervention software, while delaying a decision on state attendance-tracking software until more data is available.
   

2. Union negotiations with CharterCARE stall as possibility of nurse strike looms (browndailyherald.com) — Nurses at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence are warning they may issue a 10-day strike notice if contract talks with CharterCARE's new owner don't significantly improve by Oct. 9. Union leaders and hospital officials remain far apart on wages, staffing and subcontracting, raising concerns about services and staffing at the community hospital that many North Providence residents rely on.
   

3. North Providence Board OKs 32 Apartments on Charles Street (upriseri.com) — North Providence's Planning Board has advanced a 32-unit apartment conversion on Charles Street while pushing a controversial 48-unit Baird Avenue housing proposal and a new tree ordinance to October 14. Residents raised concerns about flooding, septic systems, traffic, and environmental testing on Baird Avenue, and the board signaled it may seek deeper environmental review before any final decision.
   

4. Controversial ex-lawmaker among 6 interviewing for District Court post (rilawyersweekly.com) — A former state senator who represented North Providence is among six candidates selected to interview for Rhode Island's next District Court chief judge, a key role overseeing the busy lower court system. The field includes several sitting judges with deep experience, and the choice will shape how everyday cases are handled statewide, including matters affecting residents of North Providence.
   

5. Cranston police achieve national recognition for crisis intervention team (turnto10.com) — Cranston police have earned national Gold-level recognition for their crisis intervention team, which pairs officers with mental health clinicians to deescalate high-risk situations. North Providence is among several Rhode Island departments now partnering with Gateway for similar co-responder models, meaning local officers increasingly have on-scene clinical support when responding to mental health-related calls.
