The fire was about 100 feet back from Main Road behind , at the site of a former carousel. The emergency was reported at about 5:30 p.m. from a Tiverton  officer on patrol and noticed a "haze" in the area, said Lloyd.

At about 7:15 p.m., Lloyd said the fire was under control but there are still pockets of fire underneath the charred structure's debris and doesn't want to put anyone in harm's way to put it out. The fire's cause remains under investigation and no one was reported hurt.

Traffic on Main Road is being detoured down Briarwood Avenue and Durfee Road.

Romeo Moquin, Jr., a former firefighter for the Stone Bridge Volunteer Fire Department, said the building was originally called Meadowlark, a night club and strip club in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He said that place caught on fire and burned to the ground. In the mid-1970s, he said the site became a carousel.

Resident Kathryn Hopkins, who lives about two blocks away from Monday's fire, said she heard firetrucks coming by at about 10 minutes past 5 p.m. She added that when her husband came home she heard a "popping noise" but wasn't sure if it had to do with the fire.

The Portsmouth Fire Department was called for aid, while departments from , Westport and Fall River were called to cover Tiverton's three stations.
