Collapsed Old Stone Bridge Causeway To Be Repaired
A piece of an old bridge broke off and fell into the Sakonnet River in March, creating a hazard for boats in the area.
PORTSMOUTH, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation will begin repairs on the Portsmouth Old Stone Bridge Causeway within the next few weeks after a large piece broke off and fell into the Sakonnet River on March 22. The broken piece is a potential hazard for boats going through the area.
The damage is considered a class-one emergency, which means that the funds to make the repairs will be made available immediately. During construction, crews will make repairs to ensure it does not erode in the future.
"We will permanently stabilize this wall so it remains structurally sound and provides a safe and secure causeway to protect the environment and navigation," RIDOT Director Peter Alviti said in a statement.
