📰 News we're reading

1. Dozens of cities and counties sue fire truck makers over soaring costs, delivery delays (kspress.com) — Providence is among dozens of cities suing major fire truck manufacturers, alleging they conspired to limit supply, drive up prices, and delay deliveries—costing the city over 60% more per pumper since 2021. Local officials say these practices strain Providence's budget and slow replacement of critical firefighting equipment, while federal regulators and states weigh broader antitrust action.

2. Central High School Students Turn Up the Heat in Live Fire Training Exercise (rinewstoday.com) — Central High School students in Providence just completed a live-burn training drill alongside Providence firefighters, capping their Firefighter/EMT CTE summer academy. The program, run with Providence Public Schools, the Providence Fire Department and local partners, gives juniors and seniors real-world emergency training, EMT coursework and ride-alongs that can lead directly to public safety careers in the city.

3. Providence School Board grants superintendent $200,000 spending authority (newenglandnewspress.com) — Providence families should know the School Board has now authorized the superintendent to approve contracts and purchases up to $200,000 without prior board votes, with oversight handled through monthly finance reports. Officials say the change is meant to speed up procurement while preserving transparency, and it comes as Providence Public Schools continue redefining local control and financial governance after years of state intervention.

4. Brown University Health receives FDA clearance for cancer treatment trials (pbn.com) — Providence-based Brown University Health is moving a new cancer therapy, ACM-CpG, into Phase 1 human trials after securing FDA clearance, potentially expanding options for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. The study, led by a Brown professor, involves repeated abdominal injections, regular clinic visits, and frequent imaging over multiweek treatment cycles.
