Caregiver Steals Money From Elderly Little Compton Resident: Police

Police said caregiver Jahlena Ann Giron, 33, stole nearly $4,000 from an elderly resident and tried to take another $4,800.

LITTLE COMPTON — A woman was arrested after police said she stole money from an elderly Little Compton resident in her care.

Jahlena Ann Giron, 33, of Providence, was charged with exploitation, larceny, forgery and obtaining property by false pretenses, police said Tuesday.

Police said the investigation began after a certified caregiver, working for an in-home senior caregiving service, raised concerns about one of her clients falling victim to fraud.

The investigation revealed that Giron took the victim to BayCoast Bank in Westport, Massachusetts, to withdraw $300, according to police. Police said Giron then withdrew another $300 from the bank's ATM using the victim's PIN.

Giron also cashed a check for $3,500 from the victim's account at a bank in Cranston, police said. She also tried to cash a $4,800 check online, but the check was flagged and not processed, according to police.

Investigators reached out to the victim's family, who said Giron was not allowed to touch their bank account. Police said the two checks Giron attempted to cash had forged signatures, as did a third that was not yet cashed.

Police said Giron turned herself in last week and will appear in court at a future date.

Little Compton police urged any past clients of Giron to reach out to them and confirm they weren't also victims of scams.
