In 1971, the Louvre exhibition “Bain turc d’Ingres”, paid homage to Ingres’ famous odalisque paintings and their influence on modern art. The exhibit included works by Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray and three paintings by a young American artist, Harry Nadler.
Now, presents "Harry Nadler: Ingres to Geometric Abstraction."
"Nocturnal Odalisque", one of the three Nadler homage paintings shown in the Louvre exhibit (and kept privately by Nadler’s widow), can be seen in the Gallery 4 retrospective. Nearby, the semi-abstract figures of the Ingres series mutate into Mondrian-like grids announcing Nadler's march to pure geometric abstraction.
Nadler's work is in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum of Santa Fe, and the Cincinnati Art Museum among many others. His numerous one-man shows include the Bertha Schaeffer Gallery (1969, 1972) and David Findlay Gallery (2006) in New York.
