Tiverton Man in Recovery After Being Rescued From Icy Waters
The Tiverton resident was rescued from his sinking boat after being stuck in the freezing Portsmouth waters for an hour.

Despite being frost bitten in both ears and suffering from hypothermia, a Tiverton man is still alive after nearly drowning in icy waters last week.

Firefighters rescued John Shelton, 64, from his sinking boat about 100 yards from shore near Common Fence Point in Portsmouth on Thursday night.

“I yelled help for 45 minutes straight for somebody to help me,” Shelton said. “I screamed at the neighbors.”
Shelton was out in the waters for an hour before units from Portsmouth’s Marine 2, crews from Bristol Fire Department and Coast Guard Castle Hill came to rescue him.

Although Shelton is still suffering from hypothermia and is having trouble hearing, he said he is thankful to God that he is still alive.
Michael P. O’Brien, deputy chief of the Portsmouth Fire Department said the temperature was about 20 degrees during the rescue.
