VIDEO: Little Compton Douses Live Fires in Fall River

It's part of the fire department's live fire training every six months. Firefighters remembered the Worcester firefighter who lost his life battling a fire Wednesday night.

"Just getting a little heat."

That's what probationary firefighter Pete Zarriello said Thursday morning as he did live fire training at a facility at the Fall River Fire Department. Zarriello participated along with five other department firefighters and Chief Richard Petrin.

"It's for orientation," Petrin said about the three-hour training. "Every six months it's part of our annual training."

Petrin said the facility in Fall River is a Class A training facility and the closest in the area. During Thursday's training, firefighters learned how to attack a first-floor fire, use thermal imaging, use compressed foam and how ventilation systems work. The objects burned in the facility are hay and wood palettes, Petrin added.

Petrin noted that Thursday was a somber day for the department, referring to the fire in nearby Worcester, MA, that claimed the life of one firefighter late Wednesday night, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

"I heard it on my pager," Petrin said. "It's in the back of everybody's head today. The more training we do, the better off we are."

"You can do multiple fires here," Petrin noted.

Petrin thanked the Fall River Fire Department for letting them train there.
