Video: Young Cast Performs "Treasure Island" In Little Compton

"Treasure Island" was preformed by The Little Compton Children’s Theater last weekend. It was a bounty of fun, music and great talent.

The play opened on Friday, May 6 and ran to Sunday May 8 at the . It was directed by Kara Rocha, who took it over this year after working as assistant director.

She described the task of sequencing and working with the young cast of aspiring actors and actresses.

“At the end of March the auditions started and by mid April they were completed, we had our cast," Rocha said. "They mostly came from Little Compton, Tiverton but we also had kids from Portsmouth and Bristol."

“It was tough, as we only had the kids once a week after school,"  But last month we were able to have them twice a week," Rocha added. "They worked really hard and I held them to a higher standard and they exceeded it."

The ages of the kids ranged from 4 years old to 12 years old.

Rocha said there was more than hard work involved, and none of the kids were forced to walk the plank.

“I emphasized them to have fun and I know it built their self confidence,” she said.

Charlie Callahan 8, who played Captain Smollett, was one of those actors who was not shy with his response to a question.

“I liked it when Long John Silver gets arrested. Acting in the play was a lot of hard work and a lot of fun,” he said.

As a review, the songs were all on key and spirited and the acting was unbelievable. The audience cracked up many times to the planned and improvised comedy.

Rocha studied acting at the Bristol Theater Company for many many years. It is where she honed her craft. She has a degree in early child education from Roger Williams University and has managed large daycares, so working with children is a natural thing for her. She also is an independent distributor and wellness coach for Herbalife products.
