The Coke Is In The Mail: Warwick Man Gets 5 Years For Cocaine Mailed To House

The Warwick man attempted to flee on his motorcycle after putting the package of cocaine in his backpack, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

WARWICK, RI — A Warwick man was sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing cocaine mailed to his home.

Manuel Jose Miranda, 37, had pleaded guilty in July to a charge of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine.

“This case reflects the ongoing trafficking of dangerous, illegal narcotics into our communities and the harm that it causes,” U.S. Attorney Charles C. Calenda said in a media release.

“Large-scale trafficking such as this fuels addiction, violence, and loss throughout Rhode Island and across the nation," Calenda said. "Our office will continue working closely with our law enforcement partners to disrupt these networks and hold those responsible accountable.”

In September 2024, U.S. Postal Inspectors intercepted a package addressed to Miranda’s residence that contained two kilograms of cocaine, according to the release.

The package was resealed and delivered to Manuel's residence by an undercover postal inspector and kept under surveillance, the release said.

"After Miranda retrieved the package from the outside of the residence and placed it in his backpack, law enforcement attempted to stop him as he fled on his motorcycle," the release said. "He was ordered to stop and get off the motorcycle and the parcel containing the two kilos of cocaine was located inside his backpack."
