Bishop Presided at Special Mass of Thanksgiving
(NORTH SMITHFIELD R.I.) – St. Antoine Residence, a senior care facility of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, held a special celebration on Sunday, June 9, 2013, to celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to the senior community. A Mass was celebrated at Precious Blood Church by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin.
Established as L’Hospice du Saint Antoine in 1913, the first Saint Antoine Residence was located across the street from Precious Blood Church. A new facility was constructed on Mendon Road in North Smithfield in 1941. L’Hospice du Saint Antoine changed its name to Saint Antoine Residence in 1987 with a purpose of “establishing and maintaining a home for the elderly, the sick, or impaired.” A new state-of-the-art facility was erected in 1994 and has 260 beds.

St. Antoine expanded its offerings in 2000 with the opening of a new assisted living community, The Villa of St. Antoine, which has 76 units. Residents in this facility may generally live independently minimal care and attention from the devoted staff.
Saint Antoine Residence is the largest nursing home in Rhode Island. From its very beginnings, the residence has prided itself on the compassionate care that it provides to all residents. The residence continues to be the forefront of developing new and better ways to care for the elderly --- Primary Care, a Hospice Suite, an Alzheimer’s/dementia unit --- all “firsts” in the State of Rhode Island. When state licensing was required for nursing homes, Saint Antoine residence received the first-ever license granted by Rhode Island.
