The Civil War and Rhode Island: How Far Have we Come? at Cumberland Public Library

Cumberland Public Library 1464 Diamond Hill Road Cumberland, RI 02864 Saturday, February 27, 2016 1:30-3:30PM

CUMBERLAND, RI – Join the Cumberland Library on Saturday, February 27 at 1:30 pm for an interesting look at Rhode Island’s role in the Civil War and how it has affected our state’s history.

Historians Robert Geake, Frank L. Grzyb, Tim Cranston, and Christian McBurney will bring their expertise to the table as we discuss the hidden issues of the Civil War and how they continue to impact us today.

Slavery and state’s rights were obviously the leading tipping points to war, but did you know that many advances were made in medicine due to the huge number of casualties on the battlefield? And that we are seeing the same types of advances being made today due to the wars in the Middle East? Also, that many of the common military techniques (such as Shock and Awe) were actually created during the Civil War.

Of course, we lost many men on the road to victory and our state and its growth was strongly impacted by the war. Our panel will discuss the issues that hit closest to home and how they still affect us today. While the war may be history, we still have many lessons to learn-especially when it comes to race and state’s rights.

Don’t miss this interesting look into our state’s past! This event was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
