Declaration Period Closed, Menard To Run For Mayor

A full list of candidates has been released by the Board of Canvassers.

The last day for declaration of candidacy for the November 2011 municipal elections in Woonsocket was a busy day at City Hall, with five new names being added to the list for seats on the City Council, seven applying to run for the School Committee and former mayor Susan Menard registering a bid for the mayoral position.

Nomination papers will be issued next week to the group of 33 potential candidates and must be returned to the Board of Canvassers by September 20 with 100 valid signatures.

Incumbent Eleanor Nadeau will seek re-election to the School Committee along with a total of 13 old and new faces in city government. Committee Chair Marc Dubois registered last week to run for City Council rather then seek re-election to the committee and Linda Majewski has elected not to run for the five member board.

The complete list of potential candidates for School Committee are as follows: Mildred A. Campbell; John V. Donlon, Jr.; Anthony J. Gabriele; ; George E. King; Anita Ann McGuire-Forcier; Gary E. Mumford; Eleanor M. Nadeau; ; Richard A. Picard; Allen R. Rivers; ; and Thomas Wrona.  

, who told Patch in July that he was considering a bid for mayor, declared candidacy for the City Council today along with fellow Woonsocket Taxpayer Coalition member . Incumbent Stella G. Brien also registered on Tuesday to run once again for the council, as did her father-in-law, former Representative .

Two incumbents, Councilwoman Susan Vadenais and Councilman William Schneck will not be running in 2011 for the seven member council.

The complete list of possible candidates to run for City Council are as follows: Christopher A. Beauchamp; Albert G. Brien; Stella G. Brien; James Cournoyer; Marc A. Dubois; Daniel M. Gendron; Roger G. Jalette; ; Normand J. Laliberte; c; Steven Lima; ; Roland Michaud; Michael Moniz; ; ; Ermie Lee Ulmer; and John Ward.

Menard is the only potential candidate to run against incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine. Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt was considering candidacy but told WNRI AM Radio this morning that she first wants to finish her work at the state level, particularly . Baldelli-Hunt said she is likely to run in 2013.
