Rivers Announces Candidacy for Woonsocket School Committee

City resident with experience in local government seeks seat on the Woonsocket School Committee in the November 2011 election.

Allen Rivers of 65 Seamans St. in Woonsocket formally announced his candidacy for the Woonsocket School Committee recently during a gathering of family, friends and supporters.

“As a lifelong resident, business owner and taxpayer, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to carry out the arduous and sometimes controversial responsibilities of the Woonsocket School Committee” said Rivers. 

“Today’s fiscal challenges, along with ever-changing education mandates demand new thinking and strong leadership in order to improve and maintain the highest levels of enrichment for our children. Being a business owner, having a wife who is a teacher, and having children in public school allows me to appreciate all facets; teachers, students and taxpayers.”

Rivers, a 1981 graduate of is a local contractor and owner of Riverside Improvements located in Woonsocket. He also owns multiple properties in the city. He is married to Darlene Marty-Rivers, a school teacher in the public school system and has two sons - Kyle Rivers and Keith Marty.  The Rivers have provided a specialized foster parent family residence for over 20 years. Currently three of the children are enrolled in the Woonsocket Public School system.

He is an executive committee member of the Woonsocket Taxpayer Coalition, the Woonsocket Rotary Club, the Woonsocket Water Treatment Plant Advisory Committee, and was recently appointed to the Woonsocket Zoning Board.

“I am deeply concerned about both the City of Woonsocket and the Education Department,” he said. “Primarily, I’d like to work to improve communication and create a healthy working relationship between the City Council, the Administration and the School Committee. In my opinion, working together is the only way the Woonsocket can move forward.”
