Woonsocket Students Contribute to Congressman's Valentines for Veteran's Project
Release: City students help with more than a quarter of the cards for the Valentines for Veterans program delivered by U.S. Congressman David Cicilline.
Along with 26 other schools throughout Rhode Island, students at the Woonsocket Public Schools helped prepare 1,630 of the 4,640 total Valentine’s Day cards that Cicilline delivered today to veterans at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol and the Rhode Island National Guard for troops serving aboard.
“I am grateful for the generosity shown by the students at the Woonsocket Public Schools, as well as all the young people from all over the district who contributed to this effort,” said Cicilline. “I know that our veterans will appreciate knowing that their incredible sacrifice and service is honored by young people across our state.”
At the beginning of this month, Cicilline requested help from students throughout Rhode Island’s First District to prepare Valentine’s Day cards for Rhode Island veterans and troops. Participants in Cicilline’s project included schools from the following school districts: Burrillville, Central Falls, East Providence, Jamestown, Lincoln, North Providence, North Smithfield, Providence and Woonsocket.
“Thank you to Superintendent Vanna Donoyan for coordinating this project in the public schools in Woonsocket. I also want to thank Principal Ronald Celio of the and Kevin K. Coleman Schools, Principal Tom Hazzard at Leo Savoie Elementary School, Principal Raphael Diaz at School, Principal Donna Coderre at Governor Aram J. Pothier Elementary School, and Principal George T. Nasuti at Bernon Heights Elementary School. And finally, I appreciate the hard work of all the students and teachers on these cards – you can see that a lot of thought and care went into each card,” said Cicilline.
Cicilline was presented with a Minuteman Award from the Rhode Island National Guard Family Assistance Center in appreciation of his efforts to support Rhode Island troops.
Since it was first established in 1996, the Valentines for Veterans program has brought millions of cards to American service members and veterans. This effort coincides with the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week, which is celebrated each year during the week of February 14th.
