The Tufts University Department of Music presents Remembering Martopangrawit- A Gamelan Symposium and Concert Celebration. April 17th marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the passing of R. Ng. Martopangrawit, perhaps the most influential Solonese musician and teacher of the twentieth century. To mark the occasion, the Tufts University Music Department and the Boston Village Gamelan are presenting this symposium and concert in Bapak Martopangrawit's honor. The day’s event will take place on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 3 p.m. (symposium) and 8 p.m. (concert) in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on the Tufts Medford/Somerville campus.
Presenting at the symposium will be several of Martopangrawit's former students: Sumarsam (Wesleyan), Ben Brinner (UC Berkeley), Martin Hatch (Cornell), and Marc Perlman (Brown). The concert will feature his compositions and will be performed by the Boston Village Gamelan and the Tufts University Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, Rinengga Sih Tentrem. It will also feature several guest artists and more former students of Martopangrawit, including I.M. Harjito (Wesleyan), Midiyanto (UC Berkeley), and Sumarsam (Wesleyan).
The symposium is free and open to the public, and no tickets required. Tickets for the concert are free with a Tufts I.D. card (limit 2 per I.D.) and $10 for general admission seating.
