📰 News we're reading

• Over 200-acre Chapin business park might be redeveloped (lexingtonchronicle.com) — A long-vacant 200-acre Chapin Business and Technology Park may be transformed into a mixed-use hub with thousands of jobs, a library, amphitheater, and new shops. Lexington County Council has given first reading approval, while Chapin’s mayor raises concerns about roughly 1,000 nearby homes, infrastructure strain, and school impacts. A public hearing is expected at the April 28 council meeting.

• Midlands superintendent recognized as S.C. Administrator of the Year (thestate.com) — Lexington-Richland 5 superintendent Akil Ross, whose work includes explaining Chapin-Irmo bond projects and school redistricting to parents, has been named South Carolina’s Administrator of the Year. The award honors his emphasis on clear, timely communication and inclusive leadership, especially during major decisions affecting Chapin-area schools and families.

• Graphic novel on drug addiction survives SC school district challenge (thestate.com) — Parents in the Chapin-Irmo area should know that Lexington-Richland 5’s board narrowly voted to keep the graphic novel “Sunny Side Up” fully available in Piney Woods Elementary’s library. After a parent challenge over substance abuse themes, members debated age-appropriateness, student comfort, and access, highlighting how future book challenges could affect what Chapin-area children can read at school.
