Better Golf Scores: Practice better than the Pros

Longer, straighter, better golf shots, easy to learn, better golf, best golf, longer shots.

I have subscriptions to all of the golf magazines. I read them all.  I do this to so that I can be prepared for the many questions I will get from my students.

Most golfers seek golf improvement advice from the magazines regardless of whether the are getting golf instruction from professional. I am frequently bombarded with questions about something a student read in a golf publication.

Most often these swing improvement tips only apply to highly skilled golfers and have no application for the average golfer. For the majority of golfers, these tips will result in confusion and will result in worse results.

Most of the golf tips offerred in the major magazines have no basis in the laws of physics that govern the golf swing and most of the physiological needs for these swing tips can create injuries for the average golfer.

The best swing for every golfer is a swing that is easy to recreate and that produces a shot that is basically straight in nature. With that being said, the ideal swing for most golfers is a swing that is as vertical a possible. The law of physics state that a golf ball will travel on a line that is dictated by the path of the golf club through impact and will curve in association with the face angle of the club face at impact.

In simple terms the ball with initially fly in the direction that the club is travelling at impact: inside to out=push shot to right (for right hand golfer-opposite for lefty) outside to in= pull shot to left (for right handed golfer-opposite for lefty). The curve that occurs at the end part of the shot is a result of the club face at impact: club face open to target line= fade or slice (for right handed golfer-opposite for lefty) club face closed to target line= draw or hook (for right handed golfer-opposite for lefty).

The bottom line is: the more vertical you swing, the straighter your shots will be. These are the laws of physics.  The laws of physics have never changed.

If you try to follow the swing of the month that is offered in the golf magazines, you will most often be chasing a swing that is based on an individual persons unique physiology and some swing tendencies that have not basis in physics.

The best and easiest swing to learn is a vertical swing with a limitted 3/4 shoulder turn that uses more movement of the arms and less movement in the shoulders and lower body. This configuration creates a body friendly motion that creates a more efficient body movement that creates straighter shots and more consistent distance.
