Networking and Personal Connections: The Key to Getting Hired

The importance of personal connections in searching for a job.

Did you know that employers hired 43,000,000 people in 2011?  Did you know that 70 percent of Americans change jobs every 4.4 years which creates 70 percent of all job openings?  Did you know that 80 percent of all job openings are not advertised?  Did you know that 88 percent of employers say “friends of employers” are the number one source for hiring new employees?

The quality of employees recommended by friends can be ten times higher than those who apply without an inside connection.

Getting started on this form of job search is easy.  Simply make a list of all the people you know that work in your industry. Then, reach out to them. Ask if they would give your resume to their hiring managers and if they will put in a good word for you.

If there’s a favorite business where you would like to work, do some digging. Find a friend, relative, or friend-of-a-friend who works inside that company. Ask if he or she would give your resume to their hiring manager and if they will put in a good word for you.

Psst. You didn’t hear it from me but rumor has it that you are 50 TIMES more likely to get hired if you have an employee connection.

So get out there and network, network, network.  Getting that dream job is often more about WHO you know than what you know.
