CARES Act Funds Affordable Housing Assistance

The City of Greenville has received over a half-million dollars in federal funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act - $463,903 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and $88,145 in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) funds.

The funding has been included in the City’s 2019-2020 Annual Action Plan, which is available for public review and comment.

The proposed uses for the CDBG funds include:

• Supporting the United Way’s Emergency Housing Assistance Fund by providing rental assistance of up to three months• Supporting homeless service providers with food, personal protective equipment, security and mobile hygiene stations• Reducing foreclosures and preserving existing affordable housing by providing one-time mortgage assistance payments • Supporting ongoing housing and financial counseling programs to preserve affordable housing

The proposed uses for the HOPWA funds include:

• Supporting tenant-based rental assistance, short-term rental, mortgage and utility assistance and food assistance through AID Upstate, which serves Anderson, Greenville and Pickens Counties, and Upper Savannah Care Services, which serves Laurens County.
