Greenville Retirement Community ‘Seals’ the Deal on Pet Therapy

Rolling Green Village Welcomes Jenny the Paro Pet

There was a time when it was highly unlikely for a baby seal to be taking up residence at a senior living community in Greenville. Times have changed.

Jenny the pet seal has been making waves for residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia for about a month at Evergreen Place at Rolling Green Village. She looks, acts and feels like a real seal, but don’t let the fur and heartbeat fool you, you’ll find she’s running on batteries.

Rolling Green Village is the first senior living community in South Carolina to have a Paro pet. They ordered the robot after doing research on its ability to reduce stress, and improve relaxation, motivation and socialization among both seniors and their caregivers. Research shows that pets, including robotic animals, can improve the psychological health of older adults living with dementia.

In October the community held a “Seal Shower” for Jenny to introduce her to the residents and their families. Residents love spending time with her, and simply petting or participating in activities together is a source of joy for many.
