• Hilton Head Island is adding armed security to local parks (wsav.com) — Hilton Head Island is adding armed, SLED-certified security guards to town parks overnight, a move prompted by the July 4 Coligny Beach shooting and ongoing concerns about fights and loitering. The guards will supplement Beaufort County Sheriff's Office patrols, focus on after-hours activity at parks like Lowcountry Celebration and Coligny Beach Park, and operate through the fall while town leaders evaluate the program's cost and effectiveness. 
• Smoke from monthlong Wassaw Island wildfire drifting into Tybee, Hilton Head (wtoc.com) — Smoke from a monthlong wildfire on uninhabited Wassaw Island has drifted as far north as Hilton Head Island, prompting questions from residents about the haze. Officials say the 100-acre fire is fully contained to Wassaw and poses no direct danger to nearby communities, but changing winds can continue to push smoke toward Tybee and Hilton Head. Agencies are monitoring conditions and reassuring residents.
