Chatting with the Chief

Chapin's Police Chief talks about the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt, the new Nixle alert system and more.

I enjoyed meeting Chapin Police Chief Troy Crump at the Chamber drop-in the other week and asked him if he ever had news he wanted to share with the Chapin community. Fortunately, he said he did and so this is one of what I hope will become a regular feature of Chapin Chatter!

I sat down with the Chief this week and he had a number of items he wanted to share. First off, he wants everyone to mark their calendars for Saturday, March 24 because the Chapin Police and the Lexington County Sheriff's Office in Chapin will be hosting a community Easter Egg Hunt. We'll share more details on this event in a future post, but wanted to make you aware so you can save the date for some good family fun!

The Chief also wanted people to know that the Chapin Police was using Nixle.com to send out emails and text alerts to citizens that sign up for the service. This is a valuable tool for his department to share information on things like Amber alerts, water boil advisories, crime watch alerts, emergency evacuations, and any type of advisory that may support public safety.

I just signed up to participate and the process was very easy. You create an account at the Nixle website and you can select to get messages via email or text on your cellular phone or both if you're an information overload nut like me. You can also enter in multiple locations for where you'd like to receive updates. So if you have a house in the mountains or along the coast, you might want to add those zip codes to your account. Or maybe your parents live in another part of South Carolina. Or that college freshman in Charleston. The possibilities are endless.

The Chief had also just met with Chapin High School Principal Akil Ross, and CHS students are competing to create a new logo design for the Chapin Police Department. This new design will be used on the patches officers wear as well as on the department's decals for their cars. It'll be interesting to see what our young citizens come up with, and we should see something around the first part of March so stayed tuned.

If you haven't done so yet, the Chief encourages you to Like the Chapin Police Department on Facebook. It's another great way to keep up with news you can use in our community.

That's all for this installment, and we look forward to visiting Chief Crump again real soon!
