Workshop Aims to Inform Parents How to Discuss Drugs, Alcohol with Children, and How to Spot Abuse

Parenting can be a hard business; throw the threat of drugs and alcohol into the mix and the job can get overwhelming. But an upcoming workshop will attempt to give parents the information and the tools they need to help mitigate that threat.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and LRADAC/The Behavioral Health Center of the Midlands will conduct a drug and alcohol awareness program for parents and other adults at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 11 at the Fellowship Hall at Chapin Baptist Church, located at 950 Old Lexington Highway.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts encourages not only parents, but grandparents, school teachers and others as well, to attend the workshop, which will be offered free of charge.

Participants will learn about new alcohol and tobacco products that are being marketed for consumption by teen-agers and young adults, Metts said.
"The products are cheaper to buy than previous products and also easier to conceal from detection," he warned.

Participants also will receive information about how they can discuss alcohol and drug abuse with children, Metts added. In addition, participants will receive information that will help them detect whether children are using alcohol, drugs and tobacco products.
Questions about the workshop can be directed to LCSD Sgt. David Amick at 803-223-3778.
