Amazing Offensive Shootout in Lexington

Lexington beats Dutch Fork in a high school football game for the ages

Love football? Hate punts? If so, then Friday night's shootout between the Lexington Wildcats and rival Dutch Fork Silver Foxes was your kind of game.

With punting -- and defense -- in short supply until the last three minutes of the game, an overflow crowd in Lexington saw the Wildcats beat the Silver Foxes, 56-49, in an explosive offensive showcase.

The win cements Lexington's local dominance this year in what was the considered the Battle of the Dam - Part II. The Wildcats beat cross-lake rival Irmo last week, the Wildcat's first win against Irmo in 10 years.

Until late in the fourth quarter, each team traded touchdowns on every possession. Lexington had the only punt of the night, with about two minutes remaining. That came after the Wildcats had stopped Dutch Fork for the first time all night on the previous possession, when the Silver Foxes failed to convert a fourth down.

Defense was practically non-existent all night until the Wildcats were finally able to stop the Silver Foxes on their final two possessions and cement the win.

Lexington's stellar trio of offensive stars shone again. Running back Kevin Miller notched his second consecutive game of 200-plus yards, S.C. Mr. Football candidate -- and USC commitment -- wide receiver Shaq Roland scored three touchdowns, and sophomore QB Will Hunter was brilliant in the air, as well as on the ground, scoring two rushing touchdowns.

Despite their offensive output, Dutch Fork running back Brandon Quattlebaum was the star of the night, scoring six touchdowns and gaining 272 yards on 36 carries. The game was his first of the season, returning after a pre-season injury.

The ninth-ranked Silver Foxes (4-2) host Richland Northeast on Oct. 7. The second-ranked and undefeated Wildcats will host Lugoff-Elgin on Sept. 30.
