Pair charged in Lexington graveyard thefts

A pair of Orangeburg County residents are being held in the Lexington County Detention Center, charged by police with trying to resell 68 bronze vases authorities allege they stole from Ridge Crest Memorial Park in Batesburg-Leesville, located in western Lexington County.

William K. Carr, 36, and Paula M. Vetta, 30, both of Vance, were arrested earlier this week in Orangeburg after trying to sell pieces of vases to a salvage operation in Orangeburg, The State newspaper reports.

Carr and Vetta are charged with grand larceny, desecrating and damaging burial grounds and property, and criminal conspiracy. If convicted, they could face 10 years in jail on the grand larceny charge alone.
