The Friends of the Lexington County Museum will host its annual fundraiser on February 2, 2013 from 7 pm to 11 pm at Lexington’s Town Hall, located at 111 Maiden Lane in downtown Lexington. Lexington’s High School was opened in 1912 and was located where Lexington Elementary is today on North Lake Drive. The first graduating class featured thirteen students, eleven females and two males. The school added eleventh grade in 1922 and twelfth grade in 1948. The original building was torn down in 1988.
Tickets to this fun event are $40 and can be purchased from the museum or at the door on the 2nd. Tickets include all you can eat and drink. The Great Society Band will provide music. Sponsorships ranging from $150 to $2500 are available and are tax-deductible. All funds raised go toward the restoration of outbuildings at the museum and the enhancement of exhibits. For more information, call the museum at 803-359-8369 or visit the museum’s website at www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum.
Founded in 1970, the Lexington County Museum focuses on Lexington County’s history from the colonial period to the Civil War. It interprets everyday life in the county through historic structures and locally-made artifacts, including furniture, textiles, weapons, and pottery. The Friends have raised over $270,000 to support museum projects since the group’s beginning in 1997. Some of these projects include restoration of the Leaphart-Harman House, the Pigeon House, the Daniel Koon House, the Rockaway Carriage, John Fox House breezeways, and construction of exhibit cases for black-powder rifles and artifacts. Additionally, the Friends have contributed to maintenance of the Hazelius House on the museum’s campus.
