Lexington County Woman Arrested on Breach of Trust

SLED agents allege that a mother stole thousands of dollars intended for her young daughter.

A Lexington County woman has been arrested and faces a breach of trust charge after she allegedly diverted and spent more than $49,000 intended for her daughter, according to an arrest warrant.

SLED agents investigating the case allege in the warrant that between July 23 and Nov. 14, 2008, Kelly Crystal Rainey, 39, of McConnells, diverted and used the funds while acting as conservator of a fund set up for her minor daughter through the Lexington County Probate Court.

Rainey was directed to place funds into a restricted account, which could only be disbursed with the court's approval. Instead, the warrant alleges, Rainey deposited the funds into a pre-existing savings account, then transferred them into a personal checking account and a business account Rainey controlled.

"Those funds were then used without approval from the L.C. Probate Court for Rainey's own use at various locations," the warrant alleges, without specifying what Rainey allegedly spent the money on.
