Lexington Launches New Sewer Hotline
With residents' help, town hopes to mitigate any future spills

With nearly a half dozen sewage spills in nearly as many months, the town of Lexington has launched a hotline number so that residents can report possible problems before they can become severe.
If people notice any odors coming from sewer lines or manholes, they can call 803-957-ODOR (6367).
"If you smell it, tell it," town officials say.

Sewage spills in Lexington are not an insignificant problem. There have been five spills in excess of 5,000 gallons within the past six months that have been reported to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, officials said.
That tally includes a 103,000-gallon spill into Twelve Mile Creek in late July, which the town and DHEC were alerted to thanks to a citizen's odor complaint.
