Lexington One Offers Free Language Summer Camp

Lexington County School District One is offering students an opportunity to learn about the Chinese culture without traveling overseas, thanks to a grant from STARTALK.

Lexington One received $30,000 from STARTALK to offer a language camp for rising 7th- through 12th-graders in the Midlands interested in learning the Chinese language. Students can attend the camp at no cost.

The camp provides creative, intensive language experiences that give students opportunities to learn culture and basic language through fun, meaningful activities and interactive technology.

The camp meets July 16–19 and July 23–26. Space is limited to 80 students. Availability is on a first-come basis.

Students can register for the camp by accessing the online registration form on the Lexington One World Languages webpage.

The camp will take place at from 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Parents or students must provide transportation to and from the camp.

Students must be present for all sessions of the camp as each session builds on the previous day’s activities.

Parents and campers are required to attend a brief orientation to the camp at 6:30 p.m. on July 10 at White Knoll High.

STARTALK is a component of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI). The initiative seeks to expand and improve the teaching of strategically important world languages that are not widely taught in the United States.
