Lexington School District 1 provides free snacks and lunch at 3 schools and any non profit organization that it can. The District has tried to get the YMCA to allow them to provide food during summer to the kids participating at the YMCA, and they always say no. I personally have tried for 3 years to get the YMCA to allow the District to provide FREE food to these kids, and all I get is one lie after another. One thing is true, though, and that is that the YMCA doesn't care about helping families provide FREE food to the kids. Corporate YMCA has partnered with WalMart to provide free meals to over 800 locations (Lexington isn't one of them) because they recognize that kids are less likely to have decent food to eat during the summer. But the Lexington branch doesn't seem to care. They don't provide food to these kids, the parents do. They don't even tell the parents that the food from the District is an option to them but they said no. All these families that could have help feeding good well balanced meals to their kids don't even get that opportunity. Because of my persistance with this matter, I believe, they actually denied my son participation in the YMCA unless I paid full price, something I cannot afford, even though he qualifies for financial assistance. Their brochure states that no qualifying child will be denied participation based on inability to pay, and yet that is precisely what they have done. Be wary of the YMCA, as they are definitely NOT what they seem!!
