Curious about social media, such as Facebook and Twitter and Google+? Then the has a workshop for you.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said Friday Social Media Coordinator Erik Murrah will conduct an upcoming workshop to educate citizens on the dangers and advantages of social media.

Citizens who have questions about the event can e-mail Murrah at emurrah@lcsd.sc.gov. Murrah will teach citizens about the common pitfalls in social media usage, Metts said.

Murrah will also teach citizens tips for responsible privacy controls so as not to expose oneself to unnecessary risk to online predators. Finally, Murrah will demonstrate how law enforcement is using social media with an increasing frequency to solve criminal cases and locate missing persons, Metts said.

Although the workshop will provide useful information for teenagers using social media -- and parents of teenagers using social media -- anyone who is aged 13 years or older is welcome to attend, Metts said.

The workshop will take place between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 at the James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington.

There is no charge for the workshop, but space is limited. In order to register for the workshop citizens should call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 and request to be enrolled.
