Updated: Gilbert Man Kills Wife After Custody Fight

Shooting occurred around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Updated, 1:18 p.m. May 25: A 31-year-old Gilbert man was arrested Thursday after fatally shooting his estranged wife after fighting over custody of their children. 

Jeffrey Adam Martinez, of 109 Hayes Street, Gilbert, was charged with murder and use and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. 

According to an arrest warrant, Martinez shot his estranged wife, Ginger Anne Martinez, 31, of Gilbert, after she came to the Hayes Street home to take custody of their two children.

The two began to argue over the custody of the children. Jeffrey Martinez then shot Ginger Martinez in the upper torso and chin with a single, shotgun round, according to the report. 

Police say Jeffrey Martinez called 911 and told the operator that he had just shot and killed his wife.

When deputies arrived on scene, they say Jeffrey Martinez admitted to the shooting and was arrested without incident. 

Ginger Anne Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene, despite efforts by Lexington County Emergency Medical Services to revive her, Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman said. 

The children have been placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services, according to the Sheriff's Department. 

Jeffery Martinez is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
