Sheriff's Food, Toy Drive Rolls On
Along with Lexington Police Department's Toys for Tots campaign, there are still plenty of opportunities to give to those in need
It is less than three weeks before Christmas, and perhaps you're starting to sweat about getting all your shopping done. But while you're out stockpiling food and purchasing all those gifts, don't forget the less fortunate in the community.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts is encouraging citizens to participate in a toy drive that the Columbia Classic Chevy Club will conduct between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 in the parking lot of the Woodberry Plaza shopping center near the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Woodberry Road near West Columbia.
New, unwrapped toys that are donated there will be provided to the Sheriff’s Department for the agency’s annual holiday food and toy drive. Citizens who want additional information about the Columbia Classic Chevy Club Toy Drive can contact William Clayborne at (803) 606-0509.
This past Friday the department donated about 1,000 toys and about 700 pounds of non-perishable food items at a Stuff-A-Bus public-awareness event at the at 5556 Sunset Boulevard in Lexington.
Harvest Hope Food Bank will distribute the food, while the Salvation Army will distribute the toys. Much of the food and toys donated to Stuff-A-Bus were collected during an annual Christmas Drop-In that Metts hosted on Dec. 1 in the Squad Room at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex.
The Sheriff’s Department holiday food and toy drive is not yet completed, and deputies still are accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items, Metts said. Citizens who would like additional information about how to make donations for the food and toy drive can contact Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Kevin Blackmon at his office at (803) 785-2430.
Other local law enforcement also is getting in on the holiday spirit. The Lexington Police Department's Toy for Tots campaign continues, with collections ongoing for the next several days at least.
