Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Horry County administrators held a Budget Retreat on Thursday. Projected growth and inflation revealed an estimated $15 million budget increase for 2023. Administrator Barry Spivey said he estimates the county will grow to more than 440,000 residents within the next 5 years, and the county would need to hire 94 employees each year to provide the same level of service currently being given. Spivey proposed a 5% salary increase for all Horry County employees. (wpde.com)
  2. After nearly two extra weeks of burn bans for unincorporated areas of Horry County, the outdoor burning ban has been lifted now that we've seen significant rainfall. The county does remind the public to adhere to open burning regulations at all times. A link to the regulations is included in the article here. (WMBF)
  3. Brookgreen Gardens has taken the unusual precaution of closing its waterfowl aviary to foot traffic amid concerns about avian flu. The nonprofit organization is following the lead of many zoos and aviaries across the U.S. by keeping the birds away from humans and other animals. The company's other walk-through aviary where herons, egrets and others live is still open to foot traffic because workers are able to clean the boardwalk every day, and there is no other facility for those birds to be housed. Bird flu is currently circulating in several states, including North Carolina, according to the USDA. (WBTW)
  4. This week's severe thunderstorms resulted in at least one family experiencing heavy damage to their Garden City home. Wednesday night, a large tree fell onto a home while two residents were inside. The tree destroyed a bathroom and part of a bedroom, as well as the front porch. The occupants, who were not injured, said it sounded like a bomb going off when the tree hit the house. Neighbors are helping out while the family determines if the home and their belongings can be salvaged. (WMBF)
  5. Two local golf cart rental companies are duking it out in a lawsuit. Myrtle Beach Golf Carts was reportedly established in 2014. The company is suing similarly-named Myrtle Beach Golf Cart Rentals and Sales, which incorporated in 2021. A cease and desist letter was sent to the latter by the former, in the fall of 2021. In a response to that letter, the latter company stated, apparently incorrectly, that it had been registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, but its registration was shown as pending and unexamined. Myrtle Beach Golf Carts claims that the similarity in names will cause marketplace confusion. It is also seeking damages and attorneys' fees. (WBTW)

  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Poor Diesel was found on the side of the road and brought to our shelter by a Good Samaritan. The first thing we noticed about him were those adorable ears, and the second thing we noticed was that one of his legs seemed odd. Diesel's leg needed to be amputated to avoid further complications from old fractures that never healed properly. Diesel has adjusted to "tripawd" life, and is ready for a family to love. (Facebook) Personal note: as dog mom to a tripawd who lost his leg when he was a young puppy, I'll be following Diesel's story closely. Dogs can live a wonderful life on three legs!
  • Myrtle Beach International Airport is having a special enrollment event for the TSA's Precheck screening program. Parking tickets will be validated. Application for the program will be completed on the spot, including fingerprinting and a background check, and an $85 application fee. • Have you ever wondered about Freewoods Farm in Socastee? Check out the deep history behind this iconic farm, still operating today more than 100 years after 30 Black families created a self-sustaining farm and community. Freewoods Farm Museum is the only known Black farmer's museum in the United States. (WMBF)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
