📰 News we're reading

1. Myrtle Beach area fitness studio catches fire after lightning strike, injuring one (myrtlebeachonline.com) — A HOTWORX fitness studio in the Myrtle Beach-area Carolina Forest community is closed after a lightning strike sparked a fire Saturday night, sending one person to the hospital. Horry County Fire Rescue reported heavy smoke throughout the Oakheart Road building as storms rolled through, and the business says it will stay shut while damage is inspected.

2. A dry start to the week before humidity builds (wmbfnews.com) — Myrtle Beach starts this Monday a bit drier and less muggy than last week, with only a slight chance of brief sea-breeze showers. By midweek, higher humidity and more typical rain chances return, so enjoy the relative comfort now before stickier conditions and more frequent storms build back in.

3. Owner of 10-foot python found roaming in Market Common comes forward, doesn't want it back (wbtw.com) — A 10-foot albino python recently found roaming the Market Common area in Myrtle Beach now needs a new home after its owner came forward and declined to take it back. Local wildlife experts with The Snake Chaser are caring for the non-native snake while they search for a proper placement, and they're reminding residents that releasing exotic pets into the wild is illegal in South Carolina.

4. Two areas of interest in the tropics (wmbfnews.com) — Meteorologists in Myrtle Beach are tracking two tropical systems in the Atlantic, including one near Bermuda that could briefly strengthen but will stay far from land. Another wave off Africa may slowly organize this week, but neither system currently threatens South Carolina, and forecasters will keep residents updated if that changes.

5. Surfside Beach Police Department K-9 officer officially retires after 264 deployments (wbtw.com) — A beloved Surfside Beach Police K-9 named Sif has retired after 264 deployments, many of them assisting officers in Myrtle Beach and across Horry County. Known for tracking suspects and missing people in all kinds of weather, she's now heading home with her handler, Sgt. Robert Pinto, to enjoy couch time, yard play, and a well-earned, rule-free retirement.
