Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. It's been one year since North Myrtle Beach started cracking down on fireworks violations, and the new laws appear to be working. The city has seen a decline in fireworks-related complaints in that time. Even so, last week, a firecracker burnt part of a dune and NMB Fire Rescue had to come douse a dune fire that was not too far from some beachfront condos. Horry County would like to enact its own version of the same law, with firework-free zones in areas where a lot of complaints occur. HC Public Safety Committee will discuss the matter starting next month. (WMBF)
  2. Myrtle Beach City Council voted to purchase two lots in the downtown area between Alder and Balsam Streets in a plan to prevent flooding. The city is looking to purchase eight remaining lots and turn the area into a retention pond to offset flooding in the Withers Swash watershed. (Myhorrynews)
  3. The former Waccamaw Elementary school building is up for lease, and the real estate company handling the property is offering free rent for the first year to a qualified tenant that will impact the community in a positive way. The building includes a commercial kitchen and a performance stage area, on six acres of land. The new tenant would need to renovate the building. (WMBF)
  4. The Surfside Beach Town Council has unanimously agreed to suspend dog registration requirements effective immediately. Up until that decision, it would have been possible for a vacationer with a dog to be fined, or have their dog impounded and sent to one of the humane societies, if it was not licensed with the town. The town's ordinance says that every dog owner in town must pay a $10 fee to register their pet, and a tag must be displayed prominently. The ordinance did not take into account what would happen to visitors whose dog did not have town tags, and might be using one of the dog parks while vacationing in the area. The town also said only 84 tags had been issued, and they are pretty sure there are more than 84 dogs in town. The matter will be reviewed more carefully by town council. (Myhorrynews)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
