Tow Truck thwarted in car theft attempt Summerville, South Carolina

Tow Truck thwarted in car theft attempt Summerville, South Carolina

All of the Low Country is asked to keep a look out for a mid to late 1990's model, white Chevy tow truck with possibly blue/dark blue lettering on it.  The driver is described as a white male, mid 30's, black hair with full facial hair unshaved in about a couple weeks worth of growth, 5' 10 to 5' 11 and chubby.

The afternoon of May 20, 2013, the tow truck attempted to take a car that was parked off of Central Ave at Canebreak Apartments in Summerville, South Carolina.

A resident of the Apartments noticed the tow truck attempting to take a car that they knew belonged to the father of another resident.  They immediately alerted the cars owner that was there visiting with his daughter.  The cars owner confronted the tow truck driver to learn why he was trying to take his car. The cars owner has no car payments since the car is paid for and knew of no reason for anyone to tow his vehicle.

The tow truck driver called someone in front of the cars real owner and was heard saying, "I have the cars owner here in front of me" and claimed the person hung up on him.

The tow truck driver did not provide any paper work that is usual for legitimate tows by legitimate tow truck drivers and as far as we know, no towing company reported being dispatched to take a car that was found out to be an illegal attempt of theft by using their company, to the police. This leads us to believe that this is tow truck driver is possibly part of the attempted theft.

The owner of the car called his mom to report what had just happened and advised to call the police and make a report. The owner was advised that Dorchester County was not the correct jurisdiction and to call Summerville police. Summerville police took the report over the phone and gave a police report number to the victim, not coming out to interview any of the three witnesses in person.

The victims mother contacted Eutawville police/Town Hall and was advised that Orangeburge County police had jurisdiction to the Eutawville address provided. However, they would not look into anything until Summerville police contacted them.

The victims mother attempted to call the cell number claimed to be the perpetrator of this crime as well.  Initially the cell rang to a recording of, "mail box is full."  Within a couple hours after the attempted crime, the cell phone recording changed to, "Disconnected or number changed."

In the mean time, there has been a report via a news website comment section of this truck possibly being seen last Tuesday, parked off of of Cattle Branch on to Round O Rd in the Walterboro, South Carolina area. It was described as suspicious when noticed then.
