Here are the top stories today in Chattanooga:

  1. Democratic representative Yusuf Hakeem questions why the Tennessee House Republicans won't consider his Black history bill in the study panel. The bill is intended to provide age-appropriate instruction on Black history to grades 5-8 in Tennessee public schools. Hakeem said he was "given assurance his bill would be discussed," then it was pushed back. (Free: Yahoo! News, Subscription: Chattanooga Times Free Press)
  2. Elizabeth Baker was chosen to fill Dan Landrum's position on the Signal Mountain Town Council until Nov. 2022. Her background in public policy, research and analysis, and stakeholder engagement will be a benefit to her new role. She told members she would like "to help move Signal Mountain to an even better place." (The Chattanoogan)
  3. On day 3 of the Janet Hinds' trial, a Chattanooga traffic investigator testified using measurements from the scene to show that Hinds was driving between 12-18 mph over the speed limit the night of the hit and run. (WRCB-TV)
  4. Chattanooga's UNUM created a vaccine verification program that will require employees to verify their vaccination status. (WDEF News 12)
  5. Chattanooga State Community College received a $10,000 donation from the AT&T Foundation to provide scholarships for minority and underserved students who are unemployed or underemployed. (Press Release Desk)
