Here are the top three stories in Chattanooga today:
- Chattanooga's City Council confirmed Mayor Tim Kelly's nomination of Celeste Murphy as Chattanooga's next police chief. "I'm at a loss for words," Murphy said after the council's unanimous approval. "This is an extremely proud moment for me. I thank the people who are here, the city, and the police department who have welcomed me, I am ready to serve you all 150%." Murphy will replace the former Chief, David Roddy, who stepped down last summer. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
- A Ukrainian living in Chattanooga is working to help the victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Just weeks ago, Alexander Bormotov founded the nonprofit group Go4Life where current non-profit members in Ukraine bring food to others. Recently, four Go4Life members evacuated 42 people to safer regions and delivered food to ten families. (WTVC)
- Tennessee's GOP-controlled General Assembly advanced legislation that lifts residency requirements of first responders, freeing up some departments to hire across state lines. However, if signed by Governor Bill Lee, the new law would not apply to Chattanooga and first responders would have to keep Tennessee residency. However, they do not have to live within city or county limits. A 1990 federal court order excludes Chattanooga from reaping the bill's full benefits. (MyFox Chattanooga)
