  1. Khial Shinwari, a former colonel in the Afghan army, left Afghanistan in 2021 when the country was overtaken by the Taliban. He came to America and settled in Chattanooga with his wife and two children. Following the evacuation of Afghanistan, 26 Afghani refugees came to Chattanooga and more than 600 came to Tennessee. Now, the city of Chattanooga is creating the Office of New Americans to help new residents with things like making documents accessible in a variety of languages and ensuring city services are available to people of various documentation statuses. The program serves Hamilton County residents only and offers counseling services over four prenatal and 12 post-partum visits. According to the CDC, 11.5 percent of Tennessee mothers reported smoking during pregnancy in 2019, making Tennessee's rates the 11th highest in the country. (WTVC)

  • Meet Paddington, a 1-year-old Plott Hound/Boxer cross recently relinquished to the shelter due to the family relocating. He was adopted in September 2021 from a local shelter and is neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, and up to date on all preventatives. (Facebook)
