- Hamilton County Commission Chair Sabrena Smedley is going on a public safety listening tour this morning as part of her mayoral campaign. Volunteer firefighters and Chief Harris ffrom the Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department will join Smedley at 9:30 a.m. today (Feb. 14) at Medic 1 so she can "understand the needs of Hamilton County first responders." According to a press release, there is just one ambulance serving roughly 112 square miles of northern Hamilton County, and Smedley wants to understand "how this is affecting service to residents and the work of the first responders." (WTVC)
- On Saturday afternoon, a man died after crashing his vehicle in the 900 block of North Moore Road, said Chattanooga police. Around 1 p.m., the 36-year-old driver of a Ford "veered left off of the roadway and struck a utility pole," and no other vehicles were involved, according to a press release. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries. No further information has been released at this time. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
- The Chattanooga Police Department has launched a new mental health co-response unit using part of a nearly $1 million grant from Volunteer Behavioral Health. The pilot program will involve sending a co-response team out on mental health crisis calls and will pair a licensed clinician with a trained member of CPD's crisis intervention team. Lt. Tim Tomisek, a 20-year veteran of the Chattanooga Police Department, told Chattanooga Times Free Press that the department receives an average of 30 to 45 mental health crisis calls a week.
