Nashville Fire Crews Battle Two Blazes, Treacherous Footing in Madison

On the way to one fire in Madison, a chief noticed another and crews had to contend with tough footing to fight the blazes.

MADISON, TN — Nashville firefighters had to fight two blazes within blocks of one another in Madison early Saturday morning.

As a crew was fighting a fire in the 4900 block of Tanglewood Drive, Fire Chief Walter Demonbreun, on his way to the scene, noticed a fire in a detached garage of a home two blocks away.

Demonbreun was able to alert and evacuate the family of five from the second fire, which was put out relatively easily and with little damage.

The home with the initial fire, however, is considered a total loss.

With brutally cold temperatures Saturday morning, as the mercury struggled to get out of the teens, Demonbreun told WKRN the difficulties of firefighting in winter weather.

"When we throw the water, it freezes on the ground and the pavement and makes footing real treacherous for the firefighters," he said. "There’s no point in calling the salt truck out here because it’s everywhere right now."

The cause of both fires are under investigation. No one was injured in either.
