Handwashing problems, flies found during Knoxville restaurant inspection (wate.com) — If you eat out in West Knoxville, Chef's Asian Cuisine on Hardin Valley Road recently scored a 71 on inspection before correcting issues like poor handwashing, dirty utensils, and flies to earn a 91 on recheck. Several Knoxville spots, including Zaxby's and Hattie B's on Cumberland Avenue and multiple Western Avenue restaurants, posted perfect or near-perfect scores.
   

2. Knox Heritage hoping to save or preserve historic Masonic Temple (wbir.com) — A historic Masonic Temple on Locust Street in downtown Knoxville faces possible demolition as the Masons cite serious safety and decay issues and have applied for a permit. Preservation group Knox Heritage and local historians are pushing to save or at least document the 1800s-era building, calling it one of Knox County's most significant and oldest structures.
   

3. Which Parks & Rec projects in East Tennessee received state grants? (wate.com) — Knoxville is receiving more than $1.1 million in state grants to upgrade McWherter Park, Suttree Landing Park, and add a new bike skills course at Holston River Park. Additional grants are boosting park and recreation projects in nearby East Tennessee communities, expanding trails, splash pads, and sports areas while leveraging the state's Local Parks and Recreation Fund.
   

4. Major $160M NSF farmland bioenergy research project launched (biofuelsdigest.com) — The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is a key partner in a new $160 million National Science Foundation "BRIDGES Engine" project to turn underused Tennessee and Alabama farmland into hubs for bio-based products. Leaders say the decade-long effort could boost income for Tennessee farmers, expand biomanufacturing, and create thousands of jobs tied to UT's bioeconomy research strengths.
   

5. Knoxville Mother Arrested After Leaving 1-Year-Old in Hot Car After Birthday Binge (lawenforcementtoday.com subscription) — Knoxville police arrested a 20-year-old mother after her 1-year-old was found alone in a vehicle for hours on a hot August morning, leading to felony child abuse and neglect charges. Officers say the incident followed a night of heavy drinking, and records detail how rising temperatures inside the car could have endangered the child before relatives intervened.
