📰 News we're reading

1. Head of Mid-South Coliseum Conservancy says investors are willing to help revive venue (actionnews5.com) — Memphis leaders are signaling it's finally time to revive the long-closed Mid-South Coliseum, and the conservancy says private investors are already pledging up to 40% of needed planning funds. Conservancy president Corey Strong told City Council they need about $200,000 to start a development plan that could turn the historic venue into a new draw for residents and tourists.

2. Elon Musk wakes up out of nowhere with "The Dumbest Experiment in History" (latination.com) — Massive new natural gas-powered data centers in Memphis are driving a multibillion‑dollar AI energy project tied to Elon Musk's companies, while sparking lawsuits and federal involvement over pollution and permitting. As xAI and SpaceX push toward 20 GW of computing capacity, Memphis becomes a test case for how far regulators will bend to accommodate high‑demand tech infrastructure.

3. Memphis chamber opposes data center moratorium, city to lose 'leverage' (commercialappeal.com) — Memphis residents should know the City Council has advanced a temporary moratorium on new data center approvals, aiming to study infrastructure and environmental impacts from projects like SpaceXAI's facilities. The Greater Memphis Chamber is pushing back, warning the pause could weaken the city's leverage in attracting high-tech investment and urging council members to keep Memphis "open for business."

4. New abuse allegations emerge as Tennessee daycare closes permanently after girl's death (actionnews5.com) — A Cordova daycare linked to a 6‑year‑old girl's death has permanently closed, forcing Memphis-area parents to find new childcare and raising urgent questions about safety oversight. Another family now alleges earlier abuse at the same center, while the owner's other Mid‑South daycares and local political ties are drawing fresh scrutiny from Memphis officials and regulators.

5. DNA helps bring fallen WWII airman home to Memphis after 8 decades (commercialappeal.com) — A Memphis-born World War II airman, Staff Sgt. Michael Cianciolo, was finally laid to rest at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery after his remains were identified through modern DNA work. Local relatives, many from longtime Memphis families, gathered Aug. 17 to honor his service and reflect on decades of letters, memories, and the persistence that brought him home.
