Fatal Nashville Police Shooting: New Video Released

A newly-discovered piece of surveillance footage shows there was no physical altercation between Officer Josh Lippert and Jocques Clemmons.

NASHVILLE, TN — A previously unavailable clip of surveillance footage prior to the fatal shooting of Jocques Clemmons by Metro Nashville police officer Josh Lippert shows that there was no physical altercation between the men immediately after they got out of their cars.

The first set of videos released late Friday night appeared to show Clemmons, 31, charge at Lippert, but investigators now say that was due to the camera angle. The new video instead shows that Clemmons ran at Lippert in an effort to go around him and stopped short of making contact. Clemmons then turned around and ran in the opposite direction(for updates on this story and other local news, find and subscribe to your local Middle Tennessee Patch).

The encounter started after Lippert pulled next to Clemmons' SUV after Clemmons rolled through a stop sign.

A police press release said Lippert never mentioned the phantom first altercation and was not shown the new video prior to his interview. Police say a hardware issue with the computer storing the surveillance footage delayed its availability.

Clemmons died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Friday after Lippert, who had been suspended twice by the MNPD for past incidents related to the use of force, shot him three times in the parking lot at Cayce Homes in East Nashville. Police say Clemmons was carrying a .357 magnum. Lippert said he felt he was in imminent danger. The FBI is monitoring the MNPD's investigation. Lippert is on administrative assignment during the investigation.
