Officers first spotted the car near the intersection of S. 5th & Crutcher Streets. The driver, Decarlo Churchwell, 19, refused to pull over and led officers on a pursuit that ended at the top of the I-65 exit ramp to Dickerson Pike when Churchwell intentionally rammed the Honda into an MNPD patrol car, disabling the Honda. Churchwell was taken into custody after a brief foot chase. His passenger, Mark Whitehead, 20, remained with the car and was arrested. Inside the car was a loaded nine-millimeter pistol, numerous pills (believed to be Ecstasy) and credit cards stolen during a recent vehicle burglary.
Churchwell is jailed in lieu of $119,000 bond on charges of vehicle theft, aggravated assault on an officer, felony evading arrest, gun possession by a convicted felon, felony drug possession, driving on a suspended license, and vehicle burglary.
