Kat Velasco Releases New Single “Ventura Highway” Ahead of Debut Album

Rising singer-songwriter Kat Velasco has released her latest single, “Ventura Highway,” offering another preview of her forthcoming debut album.

The mid-tempo release finds Velasco putting her own spin on the classic track, pairing a breezy, California-inspired sound with a story that has become deeply personal to her. With touches of ‘70s-inspired country-rock and a subtle Stevie Nicks feel, the track carries a warm, coastal energy that immediately places the listener inside the world Velasco is creating.

While “Ventura Highway” has been a favorite of Velasco’s since childhood, the song took on new meaning following the loss of her brother, Evans, a year ago.

“‘Ventura Highway’ is a song I have loved since I was a child. After losing my brother Evans a year ago, it has taken on an entirely different meaning,” Velasco shares. “Not only did my brother spend his final days in California, he absolutely loved it.”

The song’s imagery of California, freedom and life on the open road reminded Velasco of her brother and ultimately inspired her to record her own version.

“There is something about the song that is so incredibly nostalgic and hopeful,” she continues. “It’s like being on the road with someone you love, though life is moving forward I’m always wishing I could stay in a moment with him forever.”

Rather than approaching the recording solely as a song about grief, Velasco uses “Ventura Highway” to celebrate her brother’s life and free spirit.

“Covering ‘Ventura Highway’ became my way of honoring him without making the tribute only about loss,” Velasco says. “It gives me peace in my mind to imagine him somewhere free and carrying him with me wherever the road takes me.”

The new single follows Velasco’s recent releases as she continues building toward her debut album. “Ventura Highway” further introduces the personal storytelling and ‘70s-leaning influences shaping the project, while showing a more reflective side of the singer-songwriter.
