Update: Two More Charged For Defacing Popular Mural

The building's owner says it will cost over $1,000 to restore the "I Believe in Nashville" artwork, according to police.

UPDATE 12:25 p.m. Friday — Two more city residents have been charged with felony vandalism for defacing the popular "I Believe in Nashville" mural in the city's 12 South neighborhood, the Metro Nashville police announced Friday. A third resident faces the same charge after turning himself in Wednesday.

During interviews with police Thursday evening, Caleb Jones and Breanna Lesch, both 20, admitted their involvement in the incident, the police said. Jones, of Sudbury Court, and Lesch, of Thuss Avenue, were released on bond. Brandon K. Murphy, 20, was charged with felony vandalism on Wednesday. He also is free on bond. (Police photos of the three are below.)

The police said the three were caught on surveillance cameras at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday at the "I Believe in Nashville" mural, which is painted on the side of a building at 2704 12th Ave. South. The red, white and blue mural was defaced with black paint, and the word "Nashville" was painted over with the words "Global Warming."

Jones and Lesch were involved in planning the vandalism, and admitted that they acted as lookouts while Murphy painted over the mural, according to a police spokeswoman.

The building's owner estimates it will cost more than $1,000 to restore the mural, the police said.

UPDATE 1:22 p.m. Thursday — A 20-year-old man has been charged with felony vandalism for defacing a popular mural after turning himself in Wednesday to the Metro Nashville police, according to a media report. Brandon K. Murphy admitted to police that he painted over the "I Believe in Nashville" mural in the 12 South neighborhood, WTVF-TV NewsChannel 5 reported.

A young woman is facing a misdemeanor charge in the vandalism after she turned herself in Wednesday, WSMV-TV News 4 reported. The police did not release her name or age.

Murphy worked at a sandwich shop in 12 South until Wednesday, NewsChannel 5 reported.

NASHVILLE, TN — One of the people accused of vandalizing the popular "I Believe In Nashville" mural in the city's 12 South neighborhood turned herself in Wednesday morning to the Metro Nashville police, according to a media report. The unidentified woman served as one of the two lookouts for the man who defaced the mural, the police said.

The three were caught on surveillance cameras at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, and the police have released photos of the trio, WSMV-TV News 4 reported. The police said one of the men covered the mural in black paint, and painted over "Nashville" with the words "Global Warming."

When the damage was discovered early Tuesday morning, the owners of the building at 2704 12th Ave. South blacked out the words painted by the vandal.

The young woman is facing a misdemeanor charge, News 4 reported. Back in March, another vandal defaced the mural with tar, but it was repainted by Nashville street artist Adrien Saporiti.
