Children are the future, our future leaders, thinkers and dreamers and doer's, let's teach them well and model these traits in ourselves, after all, they are watching what we do, listening to what we do and modeling our very behaviors. How can you teach these traits at home:
* Model good character yourself
* Listen to what your child says with intention
* Be present in your childs world
* Encourage these traits
* Read about these traits
* Write about these traits
* Discuss these traits
* Draw these characters
* Keep visual reminders on these traits
I've said it so many times, our children are listening to our conversations, watching what we do, how we react, modeling our behaviors and most likely want to be just like who we are. Make good choices and keep this in mind when you speak and act on issues. The world has changed, this does not mean having good character should. We all know that doing the right thing is not always an easy feat, none the less, making a good choice is much better than the consequences. It's important to allow your child make choices, just lead them to the right ones, build a foundation in which they can build on. Be there to pick them up and encourage them in this life journey. We learn from each other. A child has unconditional love. Embrace it, guide them, lead them, listen to them.
Be a kid again! Dream, Draw, Color, Sing, Dance, Laugh. Do it these with your children, show them the other side of being you, you, too can be a kid! Life is short, take the time to be there for your child. I recently heard Jenny Gill tell the story of her dad, Vince Gill that he was being nominated, a big thing! Yet, his daughters performance at her elementary school where she and he were to perform was the same day. He chose his daughter. I literally cried while listening to this. We don't get many do overs with our kids and it's so important to know this, there are situations that you will never be able to replace with your child. There are many firsts, there are many second chances, knowing where to put your child first matters.
